Lillie Hitchcock Coit diary, 1872 January 1-1872 March 18.

Holograph diary. Twenty-nine year old Coit describes her activities as a member of the elite class in San Francisco: drinking and dining, receiving visitors, monitoring mining stock investments, attending the theater and musical concerts, shopping, playing euchre and gambling. Several entries reflect her friendships with Joaquin Miller, Charles Warren Stoddard, Frederick Marriott and Mayor McCoppin and his wife. She comments on society figures and fashions; her residence at the Lick House Hotel; the visit of the Japanese ambassador and his party; her membership in Knickerbocker Engine Company Number 5; the trial of Isaac "Ike" Brokaw; and, her difficult relationship with husband Howard.

Eliza Wyche "Lillie" Hitchcock was born August 23, 1843 in West Point, New York to Dr. Charles and Martha Hitchcock. The three came to California in 1851. Lillie married Benjamin Howard Coit November 19, 1868 in San Francisco; he died in 1885. After 1904 Lillie lived in Paris, and traveled.
